How to Calculate Dog Age in Human Years
The old "multiply by 7" rule is a simplification. Veterinary aging models show dogs mature rapidly: the first year equals about 15 human years, the second year adds about 9 more, and each following year adds a size-dependent amount. This dog age calculator applies that approach so you can quickly answer how old is my dog in human terms.
The formula used
- Year 1: 15 human years (scaled by months for puppies).
- Year 2: +9 human years (24 at age two).
- After age 2: +4 (small), +5 (medium), +6 (large) or +7 (giant) human years per dog year.
Life stages explained
Stages are based on the share of your dog's expected lifespan already lived: Puppyhood, Young Adult, Mature Adult, Senior and Geriatric. Giant breeds reach every stage sooner than small breeds, so their care needs change earlier. Always treat results as estimates and consult your veterinarian.
Dog Age FAQ
Is 1 dog year really equal to 7 human years?
No. That rule is a myth. Dogs age about 15 human years in year one and 9 in year two, then 4 to 7 human years per year depending on size.
How does dog size affect aging rate?
Larger dogs age faster after maturity. After age two a small dog ages about 4 human years annually, a medium dog 5, a large dog 6 and a giant dog 7. Giant breeds typically live 7 to 10 years.
What are the senior care needs for large dog breeds?
Large breeds are seniors from roughly 6 to 8 years. Plan twice-yearly vet visits, joint support as advised by your vet, weight management, gentle exercise, orthopedic bedding, dental care and senior diets.
How long do dogs live?
Small dogs often live 13 to 16 years, medium 11 to 14, large 10 to 12 and giant 7 to 10. Individual breeds vary, which is why the breed selector adjusts the lifespan estimate.
